Hey everyone, I know you have all been in the dark
as to what I have been reading lately. I have been extremely busy, with out of
state trips and bundles of homework (again). But throughout, I have stuck with it,
and that I have to owe to Brian Greene. He wrote my second book, The Fabric
of the Cosmos, and his writing has kept the pages flipping. So far, I have
learned about different theories, mainly about the nature of space and time. I
have learned that space is not just empty; it acts more like a stretchable
fabric. In fact, gravity is actually caused by heavy objects that warp space.
The moon stays in orbit around the Earth because it rolls around a curve in the
warp of space made by the Earth. I have to say, I was pretty amazed when I read
this. I also learned about a concept called entropy, which is the amount of
disorder in the world. In the book, Greene discusses that time seems to flow
towards further disorder (egg splatters, glasses break apart) because there are
so many more disorderly arrangements of the stuff in the materials that break.
For example, Greene states that in the book War and Peace, “a little calculation
shows that there are … - about 101878 – out-of-order page
arrangements” (Greene 153). I feel this disproves the discussion we had in
class about theories being fact or fiction. I feel this is fact because it is
backed up by everyday experience. There are so many disorderly arrangements of
materials that we, as humans, never see eggs unsplatter and coalesce into a
normal egg again. I hope you all are as amazed by this as I am. This book has
wowed me so much already, which probably means it will completely blow my mind
later. Stay tuned for more theoretical fun!
